You should be able to tick all of the following boxes when choosing your builder and insist on the following information.  Hiring a Builder in Spain A company registration card with cif number (company registration number) this card will also have address details A social security card, this shows they are living here and paying into the system which is important for insurance. References from previous customers and pictures of work they have carried out or, if possible, to visit a project they are working on or have completed. Were they builders in there respective countries before coming to Spain and what is there trade? Is this trade relevant to the work you have planned? How they would expect payments to be made? The answer to this should be in stage payments as the work progresses, not an up front, large, holding payment with a final payment to be held until the client is satisfied with the work carried out. Any one who cannot produce the above info should not be considered to carry out any work. They would probably give the most competitive quotation, but in most cases the work ends up being substandard and, from our experience of rectifying these projects, usually left incomplete.
